Motorcycle regulation in The Netherlands

This is a short summary of some of the legislation you need to be aware of.

Parking

You are allowed to park your motorcycle on the sidewalk. If you park on the sidewalk you do not have to pay a parking fee, which for instance in Amsterdam will cost up to €6 per hour. However your motorcycle should not block pedestrians. Hence before you park your motorcycle, make sure there is enough space on the sidewalk and always check the roadsigns to guide you.

Helmet

As apposed to some parts of the United States, it is mandatory in the whole of Europe to wear an ECE approved motorcycle helmet.

Drivers License

In The Netherlands every two wheeled vehicle with more than 50CC is considered a motorcycle. You need a motorcycle drivers license to be allowed to drive a motorcycle. There are three drivers license classes: A, A1 and A2. Only with an A motorcycle drivers license you are allowed to drive all motorcycles. If you have doubts if your drivers license will count in The Netherlands as A, A1 or A2, please call our customer service.

1. Van Dam tot Dom

In our opinion the nicest route. It takes you from Amsterdam to Utrecht along a river called 'de Vecht'. Drive from Amsterdam to Weesp, here you look for the river 'de Vecht' and drive along the river to Utrecht. You will pass the towns of Winkel, Waver and Gein.

2. Waterland

North of Amsterdam is a region called Waterland. It is know for its typical Dutch landscape and traditional houses. Navigate from Amsterdam to Monnickendam or Uitdam and you will drive through Waterland.

This is a small selection of routes. Ask us when you pick-up the bike for more tips and we will gladly help you on your way.

3. West Friesland

Around the city of Alkmaar is a region called West Friesland. It is only a 20 minutes drive from Amsterdam and you will find yourself in beautiful landscape. While Waterland is touristic, West Friesland is more quiet.
